Toro DO is one of a number of rising stars in the Spanish Duero Valley. The Region of Toro is the last Spanish Appellations of Origin through which the River Duero flows before it enters Portuguese territory and ends up in the city of Porto. Toro is, in part, contiguous with the DO Rueda and about two-thirds of the vineyards are south and west of the town of Toro itself, in the province of Zamora, with the rest in the northeast around Morales de Toro in Zamora and Pedrosa del Rey in the province of Valladolid. Toro is part of Spain's central plateau and the vineyards range in height from 600-750 metres above sea level. In general, the northern part is mainly cereal country (and known as the 'Tierra del Pan') whilst vines are mainly cultivated south of the river, in the Tierra del Vino.
