Monterrei DO

Monterrei is a Spanish D.O. for wines produced in the southeastern corner of the Ourense province in Galicia. It is believed that it was the ancient Romans who first introduced grape growing and wine making in the region. The vines grow on the sides of the valleys around the river Tamega where vineyards are planted at an altitude varying from 400 to 450 m above sea level. Monterrei is the warmest and driest area in Galicia, sharing some climatic characteristics with the Spanish central plain. With its fertile, clayey soils and humid climate the region produces an abundance of the local grape varieties such as Doña Blanca, Treixadura, Verdello and Godello.
