The little heard-of region of Extremadura, on the western edge of Spain, next to the Portuguese border is of the most fertile corners of Spain, supporting cereal, cotton, olives, cork, tobacco, vines and, above all, sheep, which are said to outnumber people!
Although not yet a household name, Extremadura is Spain's fourth most important wine region in terms of size. Although traditionally a white wine area, it is making its name with red wines, which go much better with the local cuisine of lamb, the cured ham from the pata negra and the strong cheeses.
